about

Banjiboi's debut EP, "Sounds from the Waltz Mine", is an eclectic fusion of bass driven electronic music, vintage hip hop beats, acoustic finger pickin', and pull-off plucking madness. With sounds derived from blues origins of The Mississippi Delta to darker country tones and blazing banjo licks, Banjiboi combines the best of modern and vintage styles joining several EDM genres with banjo, jaw harp, and acoustic guitar.

Tracks:

Appalachian Jaw Jam:
The song was written early on and really helped define the sound, and the idea for the video had been in my head for awhile. The jaw harp is pretty limited in scope but has such a unique and under-used sound. I actually recorded the jaw harp part of the song and used a plugin to match the key of the track. Finding a harp in the key of G for live performances proved to be a little tougher and more pricey than I expected, and I'm still trying figure out the best way to mic one.

Cigar Boxing:
I only recently got into CBGs (cigar box guitars), and the main riff is one of the very first riffs completely inspired by the sound of the instrument. In fact, I recorded my first session using a CBG for fun, and included a piece of that recording as the intro to this track to keep a very raw experience/sound in the music. The video contains many of my favorite inspirational quotes from the artists who've inspired me most throughout my life as a musician.

Straight Flush:
Written and recorded on a classical acoustic guitar, Straight Flush explores a more acoustic/flamenco sound with chords my father used to play around the house when I was a little Banjiboi. It was a lot of fun creating the little vocal harmony from a sample pack from the extremely talented Serj Tankian of System of a Down. Growing up in various metal bands, we got to be friends with Serj and the rest of the band, so working with his vocals on this was a lot of fun and brought back some great memories from the past.

Gitty-Up:
This little finger-burner was inspired by riffs and sounds found on the early albums of the Maryland-based rock band, Clutch. I was fortunate to play a show with these talented musicians in my earlier rock/metal years, and they've always had a heavy influence on my guitar playing. It's also influenced by the talented Ricky Desktop viral Tik-Tok tracks, as well as other electronic producers. I wanted to up the BPM some and create and high-energy pumping track with a half-time drop.
